Chemical detection of drugs in urine and oral fluid is an objective way to identify possible inappropriate drug use but, it requires a legally defensible approach with due respect for dignity, equality, and freedom. We are proud to be the initiators of workplace drug testing in South Africa, having conducted over 50,000 drug tests without losing a single legal challenge.

Drug testing using a threshold-compliance approach in urine and oral fluid is highly effective for detecting short-term use.

Comprehensive Drug Testing Process: From Sample Collection to Courtroom Expertise

ELS employs a two-tier testing strategy which includes an on-site preliminary–screening test, as well as a confirmation test at the laboratory for all specimens with a non-negative screening result.

1. Sample Collection and Preliminary–Screening Test

After obtaining voluntary written informed consent from the donor the initial sample of urine or oral fluid is collected by donation.

2. Delivery to the lab

The specimen (sealed and signed to prevent tampering) is shipped to the Expert Laboratory Services confirmation laboratory in a secured manner by our trusted couriers and is accompanied by the consent form and chain-of-custody document.

3. Confirmation Test

Confirmation test is conducted at the laboratory for all non-negative screening results.

4. Reporting

Test results are reported against the threshold cut-off concentration limits as specified by the drug and alcohol regulation and testing policy. All test reports are password-protected and are only communicated to the designated person as indicated on the consent form.

5. Interpretation

Our in-house toxicologist, assists occupational health professionals during the interpretation of test results, evaluation of the drug test process, investigations related to legitimate drug use and allegations of sample tampering, substitution or invalid drug test results, and the protection of confidentiality of drug test information.
